Okay this post is for some down right serious talks, stuff about morality, virtue, and honor! These talks will last a week. The first person to reply to the discussion will recieve the honor of starting the next conversation. Ex: If I pose the question and Ed posts a response first, he then gets to pick the next topic at the end of the week.

Han shot first, Han knew Greedo was coming to get him and was a bounty hunter/assasin. You don't send someone like Greedo just to check up on payments, and he knew very well that Greedo was preparing to shoot. You can see he reached down and had the gun in his hand aimed at Greedo and the second he saw Greedo reach for his blaster he fired.
Han was prepared, but he knew that Greedo had to draw before he could fire morally. Its like in the old westerns, they can't shoot if the opponent has their gun holstered.

What you mean like the old west? It was far game in the old west, and besides we dont know that Greedo was an assassin, he could be a low level lackey sent to remind Han that Jabba wants his money

In the old west their was a general sense of honor, at least in most Westerns. It was illegal to shoot someone who didn't draw their weapon on you, but if their gun was out of thier holster than it was evident that they were trying to fight and thus could be shot back.
Also, Greedo was definetely a bounty hunter, look it up.

yo, knews flash!! There was no sense of honor in the west, you been watching way to many movies. Thats all Hollywood, sure there were standoffs but it was illegal to shoot some one, just then the law was so corrupt and useless they did nothing about it.

ENDING this discussion early due to new information:
In the original release of the film, Greedo did not shoot at Han at all. In the 1997 re-release of the film, Greedo gets a badly-aimed shot at Solo before Solo kills him. George Lucas has said that this change is to enhance Solo's overall heroism. This was a controversial decision and in the 2004 version the two shots are almost simultaneous, with Greedo shooting first.

One last point, watch Bonanza, you'll see the legal matters on shooting someone. If they drew first it was self defense.
The next question is vampires or wherewolves?
